Minimize environmental risk

Why a wipe test with insect sprays can affect BPR product approval.

for biocide approval, risk assessment for humans and the environment is mandatory. In this process, many insect sprays often fall through the cracks because their composition does not meet environmental risk criteria.

Minimize environmental risk

Risk assessment for humans and the environment is mandatory for biocide approval. In this process, many insect sprays often do not meet the requirements, because their composition does not meet environmental risk criteria.

Example:

Your premises are filled with the annoying buzz of several mosquitoes and you spray an insect spray across the room. The annoying buzzing fades away and you have your peace and quiet.

But what happens to the insect spray now?

After a while the spray goes down and spreads on furniture, upholstery and on the floor.

If the premises are cleaned, the ingredients of the spray will be mopped up by the cleaning process. Now these end up in the cleaning water and ultimately in the environment or to the wastewater treatment plants.

The BPR (Biocidal Products Regulation) presumes that 100 % of the spray reaches the wastewater and thus the wastewater treatment plants. We say that this assumption could be invalidated by a simulated wipe test.

Here, we analyse exactly what amount of active ingredient can actually get into the mopping water and thus into the wastewater treatment plant by simulating the application of a spray in the room and the subsequent normal cleaning process (damp mopping) of the floor.

If this is compared with the theoretical assumption of the BPR, it quickly becomes clear that the amount of the theoretical assumptions could be many times too high.

According to this there is the opportunity to reach – together with the authority - a much more positive assessment of the environmental risk of the product or formulation. Take the advantage to improve the environmental risk of your product. We are happy to advise you!
