The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is a mosquito species originally native to the tropics and subtropics of South and Southeast Asia. It is known to transmit pathogens such as the Zika virus, the chikungunya virus and the dengue virus. The mosquito spreads worldwide through travel and the transport of goods, as well as through global warming. Since the 1990s, it has also been found in parts of Europe. The mosquitoes are bred and fed with blood at BioGenius.
